Rihanna’s interview with Oprah finally aired, and the world learned that she undoubtedly still loves ex-boyfriend Chris Brown.
Three years after the beating heard around the world, Rihanna opened up to Oprah Winfrey about it all. When Oprah tells you to talk, you talk, right? Rihanna did just that in an emotional, revealing interview on Oprah’s Next Chapter.
Only 21 when she and Brown first hooked up, Rihanna admitted:
“I think he was the love of my life. He was the first love and I see that he loved me the same way. We were very young and very spontaneous. We ran free. We ran wild. We were falling in love going in at a really rapid pace and we forgot about ourselves as individuals.”
While she has forgiven him for the domestic violence incident in 2009, at the time Rihanna was pissed among other things:
“I was hurt because it happened to me. It happened to me in front of the world. It was embarrassing, it was humiliating. It was hurtful. It’s not easy. I lost my best friend.”
When they were noted to be at the same party in St. Tropez, the world stopped in shock. Rihanna didn’t deny they saw one another saying:
“We went to a mutual friend’s party on a yacht. It’s awkward because I still love him. My stomach drops and I have to maintain this poker face and not let it get to the outer part of me. I have to maintain that and suppress it and interpret it and understand it.”
Rihanna also confirmed that the two have definitely reconciled. The world’s objection to this doesn’t seem to phase the singer because she feels that Brown and her are best friends in the end:
“We’ve been working on our friendship again and now we are very close friends. We built a trust again and that’s it. We love each other and we probably always will. And that’s not anything that we’re gonna try to change. It’s not something you can shut off if you’ve ever been in love.”
However, Rihanna did deny the two are in any way dating. Brown is in his own relationship and Rihanna noted:
“I’m single, but we have maintained a very close friendship since the restraining order has been dropped.”
People might judge her for loving the man who bashed her face in, but she never wanted to be a role model and doesn’t see herself as one, “… society has made that title. It has become a title of perfection and that is something that no one can achieve.”
Rihanna also discussed how her late grandmother, Grandma dolly, taught her the importance of forgiveness. She said that in order to forgive Brown, she had to first forgive her father for breaking up her family.
Overall, Rihanna appeared to be an extremely sweet and intelligent young woman, who has learned from all she’s been through. She seems to have accepted life for what it is, and continues to grow daily. The “crazy pop/rock star” we’re used to seeing is just a normal 24 year old girl trying to live the best way she knows how.
