The VMA nominations are out and there are some obvious frontrunners and some people who definitely got snubbed. Although MTV doesn’t really showcase videos anymore, they still find it necessary to throw a big party to celebrate the art form.

Drake and Rihanna lead the pack with a handful of five nominations each. The Degrassi alumni Drake could be walking away with Best Hip-Hop Video, Best Male Video, and maybe even Video of the Year with his girl Rihanna. But she may not need a man to get the big one, because she’s got two videos going for the top award of the night, one with Drake and one solo.

Rihanna may be the leading lady, but there are some women who might not be cheering her on…the ones people feel got looked over. Madonna was there at the start of MTV and decades later her “Give Me All Your Luvin” video is getting absolutely no love. What about Britney Spears? She was honored with the Video Vanguard Award and this year…nada for “Criminal.” Even America’s sweetheart Taylor Swift got nothing for “Ours” and “Safe & Sound.” Biggest surprise snub goes to Lagy Gaga. You’d think being one of the only pop artists to constantly make videos would get her video awards, but nope.

With the popularity of EDM culture and music, it wasn’t a big shocker that a Best Electronic Dance Music Video category was added to the mix. So ravers everywhere can expect a win from either Avicii, Martin Solveig, Skrillex, Calvin Harris or Duck Sauce.

Not all the performers are announced yet, but one class act is already talking about her performance, Alicia Keys.

“Debuting a new song at the VMAs is definitely special. I debuted ‘No One’ at the VMAs, it was the first time anyone had ever heard ‘No One.’ It was just the perfect setting. It’s the right energy. It’s the right vibe. It’s just that edgy enough for people to be open to hearing new songs. I think people are so excited about the night of music and hearing different styles that it just goes over really well, and this time I am going to debut a brand new song as well. This song is so crazy! I’m so excited for real. I’m so excited. I can’t wait to tell y’all about it but it’s just a really empowering and powerful moment.”

You can catch all the antics, fashion, and performances on MTV September 6 at 8 p.m. EST.

About sunnymenagerie

Socially awkward in most situations most 25 years olds would call easy, that’s me. TV is my soul mate, Music is my mistress and writing is my best friend. Without those three things, I’d be in an insane asylum calling myself Rosa Parks, refusing to sit in the back of the so called bus. I know more about pop culture and celebrities than I do about my family history, and I’d like to keep it that way. Words I live by: We´re all tiny books in one big compilation called life. Some of us will wait for what seems like forever for our climactic part to come. Others will have a romance novel their entire life. Or maybe one filled with just adventure. Or one that is a poetic tragedy. Then, there are those that will have best sellers. You know, the ones that everyone wants to read and base their versions on? Don´t forget the little paperbacks sold at the carwash that only a select few will ever lay eyes on. We´re all born with the power to either take what was written for us or choose our own adventures.
