Jennifer Hudson’s long nightmare is finally over, as the man who killed her mother, nephew and brother is going to spend the rest of his life in prison.
Almost four years after the shocking murders of three members of the Hudson family, William Balfour has been sentenced to three consecutive life sentences for the murders, plus another 120 years for aggravated kidnapping and home invasion. The sentence comes with no chance for parole.
On October 24, 2008, Balfour savagely murdered Jennifer Hudson’s 57-year-old mother Darnell Donerson, her 29-year-old brother Jason Judson, and her seven-year-old nephew Julian King.
The Oscar-winning actress and former “American Idol” contestant was in the courtroom for the sentence and was seen crying as the judge made his announcement.
As if Balfour wasn’t enough of an unsympathetic figure, he had the nerve to make this statement, as reported by the Chicago Tribune: “My condolences go out to the family. My deepest sympathies go to Julian King. I loved him. I still love him.”
Cook County judge Charles Burns called BS on Balfour’s statement, answering back:
“The fact that you can stand in court and tell us you love that child is an insult to all of us. There’s no doubt in my mind he looked up to you as you were putting bullets into his head. I just hope his terror was short-lived.”
The judge pretty much summed up Balfour’s character when he said, “You have the heart of an arctic night. Your soul is as barren as dark space.”
Now Balfour will have the rest of his life to sit in a cell and think about what he’s done.
