Kanye West’s G.O.O.D Music group kicked off the 2012 BET Awards with a whole lot of attention from the censors.
Getting things going with an energized performance of “Mercy” followed by “Way Too Cold,” West, Big Sean, Pusha T and 2 Chainz were met with a big press of the mute button. They were able to get only a handful of words in there, so the performance was only great for those in the audience, but that was just the start.
The night’s host, Samuel L. Jackson and Spike Lee hopped onstage to give their version of West’s and Jay-Z’s “N****s in Paris.” It was welcomed with a room full of laughter.
West also gave the world an acapella version of his “New God Flow” rhymes, making it newsworthy by dropping in parts about the late Whitney Houston and recent NBA champs, Miami Heat. His lyrics definitely set a spirited mood for the rest of the night saying, “Went from being the most hated to the God flow/ I guess that’s a feeling only me and LeBron know.”
All the while Kanye was being watched and adored from the front row by his “girlfriend” Kim Kardashian. Being the BET Awards, one can only wonder how Kim managed her hormones in a room full of so many handsome black men. Maybe that’s why she was in front, so West could keep an eye on her as she sat near his best pal Jay-Z and wife Beyonce.
In this category, a friendly competition took place between Hip Hop’s royal couple, Jay and Beyonce. Each were nominated for not one, but two music videos in the very same category. As the two waited for the winner to be called, they playfully got in each other’s faces. Jamie Foxx who presented the award joked that there might be an “argument at the crib…trying to see who’s the hottest in the household”…Beyonce jokingly nodded in agreement.
Once Jay-Z and Kanye’s names were called, the diva lightly punched her husband several times in the arm. The moment became even more interesting when The Throne duo took the stage and Jay gave Kanye a taste of his own medicine by interrupting him during his acceptance speech. Watch how it all played out below:
